Autocracy Versus Democracy: The KENYAN Concept

Kenya has been under a democratic regime since independence. However, since promulgation of the 2010 constitution, term limits were narrowed to a basic 10 years. Effective long term development policies have since been affected. Development economists, myself included, argue that denying the population their civil and political rights is good if it promotes the economic development of a country and improves the general welfare of a population. Successful dictatorship regimes like that of Muammar Gaddafi, saw the implementation of sensible economic reforms in education and medical care, as well as increased per capita income that  went above $11,000 and was the 5th highest in Africa.

On the other hand, democratic regimes succumb to mass pressure and are unable to implement reforms without fear of reprisal. These regimes discourage economic development as they are fuelled by the insecurity of tenure of office. Politicians in democratic regimes use their first 5 years in office to reward supporters and the next in resource pillage. Whereas dictatorial regimes have been known to push for serious economic reforms, democratic governments are more often slow and indecisive. Kenya can, therefore, thrive better under a dictatorship rather than a democracy.

As a certain African saying goes; “It matters less whether the cat is black or white...as long as it catches mice, it’s a good cat”. Note: A "black cat" is thought to catch mice faster than a ‘white cat’.  "Black cat" symbolizing dictatorship.

Philip Opolot: I hate to say, but there is some truth to that. With democracy, the USA has averaged economic growth of just 2% over the last 100 years. However, China with its authoritarian regime has averaged GDP growth if 10% over the last 30 years.

Mwito: I agree. Africa needs benevolent dictators. We have one two in EAC (allow me not to mention their names)...but M7 is not one of them.
